Three months ago, Hanover, New Hampshire was my home. In two days I am moving to Hanoi, Vietnam. The two places may seem like a world apart, but actually if you search for flights online, Hanover comes right after Hanoi (alpabetically). So I am moving across the world, but I am not getting very far away from Hanover. I spent the past four years freezing so I thought I was finally going to experience some tropical weather. However, Hanoi can get cold in the winter. I think I am the only person going to Southeast Asia who is more concerned about being cold than being incredibly hot and sticky (I’ve packed a down jacket, a sleeping bag, sweaters, a wool hat from Peru, Frye boots, and Ugg slippers…among other things).
I was just in Hanover for the weekend to visit some friends and say goodbye to the place that I called home for the last four years. Riding on the back of my friend’s moped was definitely a highlight of the weekend. I felt like an Olsen twin in one of their Euro-adventure movies. Also, I am obsessed with zippers right now and love the cropped zippered jeans I am wearing in this picture – definitely a must-have for the summer/fall transition.
I am nervous because I do not speak a word of Vietnamese and I am not really sure what I am getting myself into. However, now is the time to travel abroad – I joke that I had to move to Asia to get a job because of the economic climate in the US – but really I just want to travel before I have too many real life impediments. Also, they eat pho for breakfast! How bad can my day be if I get to start my day with a piping hot bowl of rice noodles, vegetables, and spices?
